Inserters can selectively be set to pick up directly from a connector (which would get a little hole much like when they do a turn) by drag-dropping the inserter from connector to target building. They would still pass over connectors they have not been linked to in this way.
If the connector has items in it, the inserter automagically gets filtered for that item.
Drag-dropping from connector would extend the connector line.
Inserters can also be drag-dropped from assemblers and logistics stations to a specific connector in this way, letting them also deposit into a connector.
Drag-dropping connectors can also be done from buildings, and might also be a way to have them make the vaunted L-shape.

Crazy related idea:
Inserters no longer restricted to the grid. Just click their start and end when you place them (with a short range) and they will travel between those 2 things, whether that’s a connector or junction or assembler or whatever

Definitely also very promising, just wasn’t sure it was possible.
Of course junctions might become obsolete if they can just grab from connectors but simplifying things in that sense might not be terrible.
Or maybe junctions just becomes a different model for the connector anytime it’s split or merged. Or maybe if you double click a connector?
